About Mesraq
ምሥራቅ

The place we look toward before we decide.

In traditional Ethiopian geography, the east was the orienting direction — the axis everything else was measured against. Mesraq is that for Ethiopian businesses: the place you look before you trust.

Why we built this

When an Ethiopian living in Washington or Minneapolis needs to send their parent to a good hospital in Addis, they call their cousin. When they want to know which hotel to book for their sister's wedding, they post in a WhatsApp group. When they need a trusted mechanic in Gondar, they ask in a Facebook group.

This system works — but it doesn't scale. The knowledge lives in people's heads and group chats, not somewhere searchable and cumulative. Every generation of diaspora starts from scratch. Every Ethiopian business that earns trust earns it invisibly.

Mesraq exists to change that. We're building the trust layer for Ethiopian businesses — a place where community knowledge becomes searchable, shareable, and permanent.

What we're building

We started with 9,800+ business listings sourced from OpenStreetMap and contributed by the community — hospitals, schools, restaurants, hotels, pharmacies, mechanics, places of worship, and more, across every region of Ethiopia.

On top of that foundation, we're building reviews — written by Ethiopians who've actually been there, in Amharic and English. Then business claiming, so owners can take control of their listings. Then a verification layer, so the community knows what's been confirmed.

This is early access. The product is real and the data is real, but we're still building. We'd rather build this with the community than for them.

How we think about trust

Habesha trust is earned relationally, not algorithmically. A five-star average from strangers means less than one honest review from someone you recognize. Mesraq is designed around that reality.

Reviews are linked to real accounts. Business owners can respond. The community can mark reviews as helpful. Diaspora location is surfaced — a review from someone in Minneapolis carries different weight than one from someone in Addis, not better or worse, but contextually meaningful.

We don't rank by ad spend. We don't manufacture authority. We reflect the community's knowledge back at itself, clearly.
